Study Description

The Massachusetts Environmental Industry: Facing the Challenges of Maturity (for the Environmental Business Council.)

Professors David Terkla and Betty Diener, UMass Boston

(October, 2000)

For nearly two decades, the environmental industry was significant in Massachusetts and across the country. But as the environmental movement began to wane in the late 1990s, employment and sales declined. In this report, industry executives identify steps to advance the Massachusetts environmental industry. It offers a way to consistently measure employment and sales, allowing reliable comparisons between it and other major industries so that public policy organizations can better understand the significance and contributions of the state's environmental industry.
