Study Description

Economic Contributions of Housing Permitted through Chapter 40B: Economic and Employment Linkages in the Massachusetts Economy from 2000-2010

Lindsay Koshgarian, Alan Clayton-Matthews, and Carrie Bernstein with Sonya Smith and Hinlan Wong

(September 2010)

Since 1969, Chapter 40B of the Massachusetts General Law has provided a unique tool for the development of affordable housing. UMDI and Professor Alan Clayton-Matthews of Northeastern University partnered to study the spending, economic linkages, and tax revenues that have resulted from the construction and occupancy of Chapter 40B-permitted housing constructed in Massachusetts from 2000 to April 2010. The report also estimates the potential spending, linkages and tax revenues that could result from proposed Chapter 40B projects.
